The official currency is the Cayman Islands dollar (CI$, code KYD), issued by the Cayman Islands Monetary Authority (CIMA). It is pegged to the U.S. dollar at CI$1.00 = US$1.20, so one U.S. dollar is worth about CI$0.83.
Quick conversions at the official rate
| Cayman price | About in US$ |
|---|---|
| CI$10 | US$12 |
| CI$25 | US$30 |
| CI$50 | US$60 |
| CI$100 | US$120 |
CIMA's own retail over-the-counter rate is CI$1.00 = US$1.227 (see the CIMA currency FAQs). Banks, shops and restaurants may use their own rates.
Can you pay in U.S. dollars?
U.S. dollars are widely accepted in shops, restaurants and hotels, but change is often given in CI$. Always check whether a menu or price tag is in CI$ or US$, because the difference is 20%.
Cards and cash
- Major credit cards are widely used. Ask your bank about foreign transaction fees.
- If a card machine offers to charge you in U.S. dollars instead of CI$, compare the rate before you accept.
- Carry some small notes for taxis, tips and beach vendors.
